There's Still Hope - The God of Love - Sunday, October 3, 2021

As we embark upon our journey to BETTER, BECAUSE NORMAL ISN’T WORKING, after spending a SUMMER in the PSALMS, remember to overpack your knapsack (bag for carrying supplies that is worn on the back) with the faith that THERE’S STILL HOPE! We’ve ended our September-October sermon series with the GOD of LOVE! The God of tender mercies, lovingkindness, and grace.  Whose love is so amazing that in spite of us He still loves us! The God who intercedes on our behalf and Who will never fail us…I am speaking of and boasting on The God of Love. Our foundational scripture, Psalm 103 has been called the Mount Everest of Psalms, exalting the soul to breathtaking heights. Charles Spurgeon said, “It is as the apple tree among the trees of the wood, and its golden fruit has a flavor such as no fruit ever bears unless it has been ripened in the full sunshine of mercy.”

In the 103rd Psalm, the Psalmist takes us on a descriptive journey of this love that God is, for God is love.  Love doesn’t define Him, He defines love! It is through this journey of understanding the Love of God we find comfort in knowing, There’s Still Hope.

8The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love
Verse 8, tells us that the God of Love is FULL OF FAITHFUL LOVE. If something is full of something that means it doesn’t have capacity for anything else. The good news: God is committed to loving us, because it’s Who HE is. Just in case Mary J. Blige is still “looking for a real love” feel free to introduce her to the God of Love.  His LOVE CANNOT BE carjacked, contorted, or compromised.
There’s Still Hope!

11For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him;
Verse 11, speaks to the inescapability, the incomprehensibility, the insurmountableness, and infinity of the Love of God. It is FAR REACHING! Distances between Earth and the blue skies (1st heaven) and between the blue skies and the stars and constellations (2nd heaven) have been measured and mathematically calculated.  But no one has or will be able to methodically determine the distance between the stars and constellations (2nd heaven) and where God dwells (3rd heaven). NOAA, Google, Alexa, Cortana, or Siri cannot assist with assessing the distance to the 3rd heaven. Listen, we are not perfect. Yes, we may fall short, but our lot, luxury, lack, location, level, lure, or logic cannot place us in a space out of the reach of the God of Love. There’s Still Hope!

17 But from everlasting to everlasting The Lord’s love is with those who fear Him, and His righteousness with their children’s children
Verse 17 tells us that the God of Love’s love is FOREVER. One of the things I’ve come to learn from my own experience is that Fatherly love is that type of love in which the act of giving your life for the sake of your children’s needs is performed.

There was a woman, whose father was in hospice. He lost the use of his legs, as prostate cancer metastasized (spread to different parts of his body). His daughter’s car broke down on her way to work.  She had no one else to call, but her ailing father.  “Daddy, my car broke down!” Her father told her to place a note on the car, so that it would not be towed and for her to go to work.  Later that evening, when she arrived home from work.  Her car was fixed and parked in front of her house. Sickness was not a barrier to that father’s love for his daughter, just as our sins can’t trump the love of God for us, because love removes the barrier that separates us from Him. There’s Still Hope!

A lyricist penned a song titled, “Where you at?” In each verse, Jennifer Hudson painstakingly sung an inventory of unfulfilled promises. Each of those promises were empty leaving the intended heart melancholy and asking repeatedly, “where you at?”, because they never showed up! My sister and my brother, I am and aren’t you glad that our GOD is not like that? Our God, The GOD of LOVE is a Promise Keeper.  The Bible declares in II Corinthians 1:20 (NKJV), “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” Thank You Jesus, There’s Still Hope!
