There's Still Hope - The God of Comfort - Sunday, September 5, 2021 2021

Brothers and sisters, it is quite difficult to position ourselves in the grip of Hope when everything around us seems hopeless. No matter how spiritual one may believe they are, circumstances quickly remind us of just how human we are. But, there is a word of encouragement in our September sermon series, “There’s Still Hope”. How? I am glad you asked. We have direct access to the God of comfort - the Fountain whence all consolation, happiness, and bliss flow. Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 with me:
3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our LORD Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7 And our hope of you is steadfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
Have you seen the news or read the headlines, lately? The headlines alone are terrifying…The CDC Eviction Moratorium is Ending.  Drug Overdose Deaths are at an All Time High…COVID Variant Worse than Delta Set to Hit the U.S. in 2-4 Months…Hurricanes, Tornados, Wildfires, Civil Unrest, Family Trouble! The list goes on and on.

This is a lot, but listen. Verses 3 -4, reminds of us of this truth, “The God of ALL comfort, comforts us in ALL our tribulations.”  In other words, what He personifies, He performs.  He personifies Comfort (Paraclete), therefore He Comforts (Parakaleo). Just like a Daddy, daddies or a Mommy, mommies, or a Teacher, teaches, the Paraclete, Parakaelos (the Comforter) comforts. He literally calls His children to His side to assist and strengthen them. This is good news.  It lets us know that we have the God of comfort’s GUARANTEED PRESENCE. Yes, that’s right, you’ve got COMPANY! You are never alone and you are in good company! Like Daniel in the lion’s den had company…you’ve got company!  Just as the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace had company…you’ve got company…in ALL tribulations, YOU HAVE COMPANY!

Yes, my sisters and my brothers in TRIBULATIONS (crushing pressure) we also have GUARANTEED HELP! The Paraclete (the Comforter), our Helper ensures that the squeezing doesn’t lead to crushing. If an orange is crushed, everything in it is going to come out during the pulverization (crushing). Our paraclete (our Help…our Comforter) ensures that the squeezing doesn’t lead to crushing.  Thank You Jesus!

But the good news doesn’t stop there.  Not only can we still have hope because of the God of Comfort’s GUARANTEED PRESENCE and GUARANTEED HELP, but we can still have hope because of a GUARNTEED VICTORY! Verse 4b states, “…that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”  You are walking around with victory in you! The ultimate goal in mind is that you might shift in position from comforted to comforter…from the tested to being a testimony...from having company to being someone's company.

You made it through that tribulation of lack, loss, sickness, loneliness, and/or trouble with the victorious word in you that can pull/comfort/help/accompany somebody else through!
