Summer in the Psalms – Emotion: Happiness Sunday, August 1, 2021

The warmth of our worship experience was like sunshine on a cloudy day and was the perfect introduction to our new sermon series, “Summer in the Psalms”. We entered Psalm at One. The blessed life! Charles H. Spurgeon comments that, “Psalm 1 forms the text “upon which the whole of the Psalms make up a divine sermon”.”

If each of us would be honest just for a moment, I believe we all would agree with this, we all want to live a happy and blessed life. Here in Psalms 1, there is revelation of how to live this happy and blessed life… Psalm 1 reads in the KJV, “1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

This life, this blessed life patterned after Jesus our Lord Christ is enviable (very desirable) so many want it, but are they willing to walk it? There is a decision to be made. This blessed life, this internal, emanating happiness is dependent upon one’s walk…not just how one walks, but with whom one walks. The Hebrew word for blessed in Psalm 1:1 means happy, fortunate and rooted in an old Akkadian word for walking a straight path. Which suggests that my ability to walk in the right path and with the right person allows me to walk in a happiness that is not based on happenstance, but relationship. A continual, connected, consistent relationship with One Who loves you, has walked the path before you, and will walk the path alongside you!

The challenge and the choice. We can obtain and maintain this happiness by not allowing external factors to gage our thinking and acting. We achieve this by also NOT following (walking) in wicked advice; NOT standing on the road of sinners; and NOT sitting with the disrespectful. Psalm 1 gives us a beautiful blueprint for a blessed life of happiness. So many want this life, but are they willing to walk this life? The decision is yours!!! This blessed life is the best life!
