Better (THINKING), Because Normal Isn't Working

Friend, the palpable presence of the spirit of God was resonant in the worship and the word last Sunday morning.  You still have an opportunity to encounter…we made sure service was recorded with you in mind.

Philippians 4:8-9, the foundational scripture of Sunday’s text in Part 5 of the “Better, When Normal Isn’t Working” series, Apostle Paul engages the Philippian church and the church of today to practice RIGHT THINKING! Right thinking stands shoulder to shoulder with standing firm in the Lord (v.1), rejoicing in The Lord always (v.4), let your gentleness be evident to all (v.5), and do not be anxious for anything, but pray about everything! (v.6). Along with these attitudes thinking better or right thinking is key!  Our thoughts must match where we are going and not where we have been.

Our thoughts are the precursor (leader) to all actions…We have the power to choose...BETTER THINKING or that awful alternative STINKING/STAGNANT THINKING.
Stinking/Stagnant thinking will live you stuck…on a merry-go-round. Yes, you are moving, but not forward on the path to better…the first three (3) of the merry-go-round areas of stinking/stagnant thinking are: (1) criticizing thoughts - being overly critical of you can breed a life imprisoned in fear and anxiety) (2) overgeneralizing thoughts - drawing blanket conclusions for every scenario…just because salt and sugar look the same, does not mean they have the same function and flavor…one (1) cup of salt in Grandma’s pound cake recipe…no thanks! Lastly, (3) magnetizing thoughts - the act of magnifying the negative aspects and filtering out the positive aspects. This one is tricky. You can be in your better, but caught up in so much negativity that you cannot see it.

Be real with yourself, you can’t fully enjoy and embrace the newness of BETTER and BETTER THINKING with negative thinking. Negative thinking sits outside of God’s will for our lives…none of these ways of thinking have blessings attached to them. Proverbs 23:7 (KJV) teaches, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Philippians 4:8-9 (ESV) gives us the perfect practice to rewire our thoughts from stinking/stagnant to RIGHT/BETTER THINKING…” 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned[and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. RIGHT THINKING is the right direction and mindset to grow/go towards your goal of BETTER.

Now, take a moment and reflect on those areas in which you find yourself struggling with criticizing thoughts, overgeneralizing thoughts and/or magnetizing thoughts.  As you begin to think about those thoughts, identify areas in your life that must change in order for you to engage on your journey towards better.  It’s important that you are honest with yourself in order for you to experience your breakthrough. You’ve got this!
