What is Baptism?
Baptism is for the believer, and is to be done by total immersion in water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 3:11; Matthew 28:19-20) The word “baptize” comes from the Greek word, baptizo, which means to immerse. That is why we believe that the most appropriate mode of baptism is complete immersion into a body of water.
A believer is a person who has sincerely professed belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. As indicated in Acts 2:38, we must first repent (acknowledge and turn away from our sins) and then be baptized.
Baptism allows us to declare that we are washing away the old and becoming new in Christ Jesus. It is symbolic of going down in the grave and coming back up in new life. It is an outward act, which shows an inward change. We have died to our old sinful natures and are resurrected to new life in Christ
- An entrance into the household of faith
- A symbol of repentance
- An inner cleansing from sin
- A representation of the new birth of Christ Jesus in us
- A mark of Christian discipleship (A personal declaration that you are ready to follow Jesus)
Scriptures to read about Baptism:
- Matthew 3:11,13 – Water Baptism
- Mark 1:5- Water Baptism
- Matthew 28:19-20- Obeying God’s Command
- Galatians 3:27 – Baptized into Christ
- Romans 6:3-4 –Baptism into Christ
WHAT DOES BEING TOTALLY IMMERSED IN WATER SYMBOLIZE?
It stands for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It symbolizes being buried with Christ in a watery grave, and rising again new and clean of all sins.
WHY IS BAPTISM NECESSARY?
It is done in obedience to Christ. It represents an entrance into the family of faith and of being born into Jesus Christ.
WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?
Those who truly believe and have received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those who want to turn their lives over to Jesus.
